Welcome to Grange Trekking Accommodation

Stay, Ride and Slow Down in the Black Mountains

Grange Trekking Accommodation is a family-run place to stay at Capel-y-Ffin, surrounded by the Black Mountains and close to Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park.

The Griffiths family have been welcoming riders here since 1957, and today three generations remain involved in the trekking centre and accommodation. That history gives The Grange a character that is hard to manufacture: this is somewhere shaped by horses, family life and decades spent exploring the surrounding hills.

Guests can choose between the traditional Victorian farmhouse guesthouse, simple glamping or camping. The guesthouse offers en-suite rooms, a sitting room with a log fire and hearty home cooking, while the shepherd’s hut and glamping pod provide a more pared-back way to wake up among the hills. Camping is also available for visitors who simply want a pitch and the landscape around them.

You certainly don’t have to ride to stay here, but horses are naturally part of life at The Grange. Guests can combine their break with horse riding in Bannau Brycheiniog, with routes heading straight into the Black Mountains on sure-footed Welsh cobs. Walkers and cyclists are equally well placed, with the Cambrian Way, Offa’s Dyke Path and Cycle Route 42 all passing through this part of the landscape.

There is deliberately little emphasis on screens and constant connection here. The farmhouse has no television and phone signal is limited, making evenings by the log fire, meals around the table and time outdoors part of the experience rather than something squeezed in around everything else.

The book town of Hay-on-Wye is within reach for a day away from the hills, while Capel-y-Ffin itself offers the quieter experience of staying deep in one of the most distinctive valleys of the Black Mountains.

For riders, walkers, cyclists or anyone who wants a few days somewhere genuinely rooted in the landscape, The Grange offers a warm, uncomplicated stay with generations of local knowledge behind it.
