Farmstead and Wild
Two shepherd’s huts at a restored Welsh hill farm between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye
Farmstead & Wild offers two traditional shepherd’s huts at Cefnmachllys Farm near Talachddu. Each hut sleeps two and they can be booked separately or together for a stay for four, with their own meadow settings for privacy.
Both huts have a full-size double bed, wood-burning stove, outdoor seating and a fire bowl or barbecue. Meadow Hut has a private kitchen in a nearby stone barn, while Hawthorn Hut has a private kitchen in a converted horsebox. The shared Ty-Bach shower and WC is about 50 metres from each hut. Pets are not accepted because of the nearby livestock.
Guests can explore the farm’s meadows, stream and temperate rainforest valley, or walk directly onto Llandefalle Common. The setting works well for wildlife watching, dark skies and walking, with Brecon, Hay-on-Wye, Llangorse and the Black Mountains within reach.
Meadow Hut looks towards the Black Mountains, while Hawthorn Hut faces the farm’s oak woodland. The separate kitchens mean each couple can prepare meals independently when both huts are booked together. Meadow’s stone-barn kitchen has an induction hob and mini-cooker; Hawthorn’s converted horsebox kitchen has an induction hob and microwave. Towels and an initial basket of logs are provided. Guests should bear in mind that the WC and shower are a short outdoor walk from the huts, rather than en suite.
A sunken holloway leads from the farm to Llandefalle Common, with wide views across the Black Mountains. At the farm, guests can follow the stream through restored woodland and watch for birds among the wildflower meadows. This is a stay for people who enjoy being outdoors as much as having a warm hut to return to.
