Gwernyfed Walled Garden and Café near Three Cocks is a place to slow down, eat well and spend time in a lovingly restored Victorian walled garden on the eastern side of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons).
Over more than 15 years, Joel and Charlane have transformed what was once a school football pitch and derelict glasshouse into a productive garden filled with vegetables, fruit, flowers, bees and the occasional wandering Indian Runner duck.
The café sits at the heart of that story. Seasonal light lunches make use of vegetables grown in the garden, while freshly made cakes, loose-leaf tea and freshly ground coffee are served in the relaxed surroundings of the glasshouse or at tables dotted throughout the garden.
This is not somewhere designed to rush through. Part of the pleasure is wandering the garden, seeing what is growing and then sitting down to eat surrounded by the place that helped produce it. The mismatched china, informal atmosphere and constantly changing garden give each visit its own character.
Gwernyfed is well placed for visitors exploring between Hay-on-Wye and the Black Mountains, making it an easy stop for lunch, coffee and cake or simply some quieter time during a day out.
For anyone interested in local food, gardens and places with a real story behind them, Gwernyfed Walled Garden offers something wonderfully simple: good things grown, cooked and enjoyed in the same place.
