Welcome to Farmstead and Wild

Stay in handcrafted shepherd’s huts at a restored Welsh hill farm between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye, Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park

Farmstead & Wild offers two self-catering shepherd’s huts at historic Cefnmachllys Farm in the village of Felin Fach, between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye. Surrounded by the landscapes of northern Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, it provides an excellent base for couples looking to explore walking routes, wildlife, market towns and some of Wales’ darkest skies while enjoying the comfort and privacy of a rural stay.

Each shepherd’s hut sits within its own meadow, offering open views across the surrounding countryside and plenty of space to enjoy the changing seasons. Inside you’ll find a comfortable sleeping area, wood-burning stove and kitchenette, while separate outdoor cooking facilities, seating and a fire bowl make it easy to enjoy breakfast outdoors or spend an evening beneath the stars.

What makes Farmstead & Wild distinctive is the landscape itself. Since 2013, the owners have been restoring the historic Cefnmachllys farmstead and surrounding land, creating species-rich meadows, regenerating woodland and encouraging wildlife to flourish. Guests are welcome to explore the farm, discover the temperate rainforest valley, enjoy the changing wildlife throughout the seasons or walk directly onto Llandefalle Common for wide-reaching views across the Black Mountains and Bannau Brycheiniog. Every stay supports the continued care of this remarkable landscape.

Its location makes it easy to discover some of the area’s best-loved places while enjoying a quieter base away from the busiest visitor hotspots. Browse the independent bookshops of Hay-on-Wye, explore Brecon’s cafés, canal basin and Georgian streets, spend the day at Llangorse Lake or head into the Black Mountains for walking and cycling. Many walks begin from the farm itself, giving you the opportunity to leave the car behind and experience the surrounding countryside on foot.

Whether you’re planning a walking holiday, celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a few days exploring this part of Mid Wales, Farmstead & Wild offers a distinctive place to stay where thoughtful accommodation, landscape restoration and the quieter side of Bannau Brycheiniog come together naturally.
