Hay Castle
Hay Castle
In the centre of Hay-on-Wye, Hay Castle brings history, art, food and a changing programme of events together in one place. You can make it part of a day exploring the town, spend time in an exhibition or plan a visit around a talk, performance or workshop. The Great Hall, shop and café are free to enter, with ticketed options for exploring more of the castle.
Guided tours take you behind the scenes of the historic building. Led by volunteers, they offer a way to get to know the castle beyond its exterior; tour availability varies, and private visits for larger groups can be arranged. Exhibitions provide another reason to return, with the programme changing throughout the year.
The ground-floor café, run by Epicure, looks out across the lawn through large windows. Stop for brunch, a light lunch or something from the cake counter. In warmer weather, food and drinks can be enjoyed outside; an open fire gives the café a different feel in winter. It is a place to pause between the castle and the streets of Hay.
Public events include talks, music, films and creative workshops. The castle also hosts weddings and private celebrations, with options ranging from a ceremony to exclusive use of the castle and grounds. These are distinct ways to experience the same setting, whether you are visiting for an afternoon or gathering people for an occasion.
Access is from Oxford Road, close to the public car park. A lift serves the castle floors except the cellar, so visitors joining a tour should discuss any access requirements in advance.
