About Merthyr Tydfil

Sitting on the southern edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, Merthyr Tydfil is one of the great gateway towns into the landscape of waterfalls, mountains and industrial heritage that shaped this part of Wales. Once known as the iron capital of the world, the town today blends culture, outdoor adventure and easy access to some of the National Park’s best-loved locations.

From Merthyr, you are within easy reach of the famous waterfalls of Pontneddfechan and the Four Falls Trail, the open landscapes around the Taf Fechan Forest, and walking routes leading towards Pen y Fan and the Central Beacons. The area is also popular for mountain biking, climbing, caving and watersports, while the nearby reservoirs and forests provide quieter places to explore away from the busiest routes.

About Merthyr

The town itself has strong links to Welsh industrial history, music and sport, with attractions, parks, cafés and independent businesses offering a useful base for exploring the wider area.
