The historic market town of Brecon, Aberhonddu in Welsh, offers a warm welcome with it’s bustling streets, shops, cathedral, museums and plenty of cafes.

About Brecon

Brecon is a historic and picturesque market town at the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, offering a unique blend of culture, charm, and outdoor adventure. Known for its Georgian and Victorian architecture, the town is steeped in history, from its medieval castle to the iconic Brecon Cathedral. Visitors can enjoy independent shops, cosy cafés, and traditional pubs, while soaking up the friendly, vibrant atmosphere.

Brecon Cathedral

Although Brecon has a cathedral we are not a city. The title of cathedral was bestowed on the church of St John in the creation of the Dioceses of Swansea and Brecon in 1923. Swansea gained the title city and we got the Cathedral. Our Cathedral is well worth looking for and the Welcomers are on hand to guide you through and around the cathedral. A fully accessible place of worship and also of community cathedral. You will find a full programme of events in place.

This is one of the most scenic and spectacular canals in the UK.

Penwyllt Circuit

Penwyllt Circuit – extensive views in the less visited South West of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) Park, you look down the Upper Swansea Valley and beyond as you follow old railway lines and tramroads.

Priory Groves, Brecon

Priory Groves is woodland in the Honddu river valley. It stretches from below the Cathedral towards the village of Llanddew.

Abergavenny to Llanthony Priory (Beacons Way – day 1)

Beacons Way – Day 1 The first day offers spectactual views from the summits of The Skirrid or 'Yr Ysgryrd Fawr' and Hatterrall Hill.

Usk Reservoir

Remote, but beautiful, Usk Reservoir is circled by a mainly stone track, the longer slopes are downhill if you walk clockwise.

Talybont-on-Usk

Keepers Pond to Blorenge

Circular walk offering extensive views across the Bannau Brycheiniog/Brecon Beacons National Park. Admire Usk Valley and climb the Blorenge mountain.

Henry Vaughan Walk

Come, take a stroll in the footsteps of Henry Vaughan, a 17th century poet, whose bardic name was ‘the Swan of the Usk’.
