Welcome to Dan Yr Ogof Caves
Dan-yr-Ogof Caves – Step Into the Hidden History of the Brecon Beacons
Located in the western part of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, Dan-yr-Ogof Caves are one of Wales’ most remarkable natural wonders – and one of the longest explored cave systems in the UK. First discovered by the Morgan Brothers in 1912, their brave candlelit exploration has since revealed over 16km of underground passageways, rich with dramatic rock formations and fascinating stories from the past.
In Dan-yr-Ogof Cave, visitors can follow a safe, well-lit trail to marvel at incredible natural features like the Rasher of Bacon, The Angel, and the Alabaster Pillar. The cave follows the path of the underground river Llynfell, which emerges dramatically at the cave entrance.
Cathedral Cave, discovered in 1953, leads to one of the most breathtaking sights in any UK cave – the Dome of St Paul’s, where waterfalls tumble into crystal-clear underground lakes and thousands of delicate stalactites hang from the ceilings.
Bone Cave is a window into human and animal life from over 3,000 years ago. Inside, exhibits reveal how the caves were used during the Bronze Age, including the discovery of 42 human skeletons, Roman artefacts, and evidence of once-roaming hyenas and cave bears.
A visit to Dan-yr-Ogof offers both a thrilling underground adventure and a deep connection to the geological and human history of Wales.
