Penderyn and Hirwaun

Penderyn Distillery

Nestled in the southern reaches of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, the neighboring villages of Penderyn and Hirwaun offer visitors a blend of rich heritage, thrilling adventures and warm Welsh hospitality. From savouring award-winning whiskies to soaring through the skies on exhilarating zip lines, these communities provide an array of experiences for all who venture here.

Penderyn and Hirwaun

Well hidden, but stunning scenery in South Wales, the Rhigos Mountains offer diverse adventures for all. Visitors can walk, cycle or zip line through stunning landscapes shaped by a rich coal mining heritage. The nearby villages provide welcoming accommodations and dining options, serving as gateways to explore the great outdoors and delve into the area’s industrial past.

St Lleurwg's Church

St Lleurwg’s Church, established in 1858 in Hirwaun, is uniquely dedicated to Saint Lleurwg, with no other church in Wales sharing this patronage. Over its 155-year history, it has undergone significant changes, including interior refurbishments that replaced pews with chairs to create a welcoming and adaptable space for worship and community events. Regular services are held on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Penderyn Distillery

Penderyn Distillery, established in 2000 in the Brecon Beacons National Park, revived Welsh whisky-making after over a century. Their award-winning single malt whiskies, such as the flagship Madeira Finish, are distilled using a unique Faraday still, producing a flavourful spirit at 92% ABV. Aged in ex-bourbon casks and finished in Madeira wine casks, Penderyn whiskies are celebrated for their smooth, rich profiles. The distillery welcomes visitors for tours and tastings, offering an immersive experience into Welsh whisky craftsmanship.

A short but varied walk leads through the pretty Country Park – the former pleasure gardens of Craig-y-Nos castle, past lakes and ponds.

Penwyllt Circuit – extensive views in the less visited South West of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) Park, you look down the Upper Swansea Valley and beyond as you follow old railway lines and tramroads.

Craig-y-Nos to Llanddeusant (Beacons Way – day 6)

Craig-y-Nos to Llanddeusant (Beacons Way – day 6) Day six starts from Craig y nos Country Park, once owned by the opera singer Dame Adelina Patti. The route takes you to Llyn y Fan Fawr, the highest natural lake in south Wales. Chose between the good or poor weather routes based on the forecast for the day.
