Walking Grades
Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park offers walking routes for every ability, from gentle, accessible paths to challenging mountain trails. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing stroll or an adventurous hike, our graded routes help you choose the perfect walk to match your pace, mood, and level of experience.
How difficult are our walks?
Whether you prefer strolling along to take in the gems you pass or energetically stepping up a slope to get your heart pounding, you’re guaranteed to find a walk to suit your mood and needs within easy distance of your base here in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park.
Little can match the enjoyment of ambling along a canal towpath or riverside path, exploring a wildflower carpeted wood, being rewarded with breathtaking views from the top of one of our mountains or being dazzled by our star bedecked dark skies. Search the graded walks across the National Park via the map to find a walk which is right for you now.
Here are details of how we have graded our walks:
Grade 1 | Barrier free routes with negligible gradients and solid or compacted surfaces. May also have seats. |
Grade 2 | Routes with some sections with slightly looser or muddy surfaces, slight gradients and gates but no stiles. There is also a lack of seats. |
Grade 3 | Routes with occasional long or steep gradients, a narrow path in places, poor surfaces and kissing gates or stiles. There may be no seats. |
Grade 4 | Routes with narrow sections, steep gradients or muddy and stony surfaces. Gates may be narrow or there may be stiles. There are no seats. |
Grade 5 | Routes with stiles and steps, steep gradients, soft boggy ground and exposed sections with steep ground falling away from path edge. |
